This work consists of understanding and describing the processes responsible for the formation of caves in carbonate environments and in siliciclastic environments (sandstones), establishing the correlation between their formation factors and climatic, social and economic changes in their preservation, maintenance or destruction. The climatic conditions of different locations is an important factor in the formation of natural cavities, thus, in the current scenario of climate change, new caves can be generated, in addition to those impacted by the existing ones. In this context, it is important to verify the vulnerabilities and environmental impacts to which Brazilian caves are subject and how the legislation protects this environmental heritage, especially with the enactment of National Decree 10,935/2022, which allows interventions in caves, caves and other underground natural cavities. Thus, this project proposes the analysis of geological events in the generation, modification and preservation of caves, considering their great importance for society (in the ecological, geological, hydrological, paleontological, cultural and socioeconomic areas), as well as an analysis of how the environmental legislation of caves protects them from impacts.
