Item Potential bycatch of seabirds and turtles in hook-and-line fisheries of the Itaipava Fleet, Brazil(ELSEVIER, 2007-05-28) BUGONI, L.; TATIANA, S. S.The decline of populations of certain seabirds and sea turtles around the world is partly related to their incidental capture in large-scale fisheries. However, the impacts of small-scale fisheries on endangered seabirds and sea turtles, being carried out in many places around the world, have been largely neglected by scientists and governments. We monitored 178 fishing days and described a range of poorly known hook-and-line commercial fisheries carried out by the Itaipava fleet, southeastern Brazil, composed by 497 vessels and deploying hooks from 18◦S to 35◦S. Seven fisheries were defined: fast trolling for tuna and tuna-like species, slow trolling for Bigeye tuna, handlining, surface longline for Dolphinfish, pelagic longline for Swordfish, bottom dropline, and pole-and-line with live bait. We observed bycatch of 47 seabirds of six species and 45 turtles of four species. Capture rates were higher for the surface longline for Dolphinfish (0.15 birds/1000 hooks and 1.08 turtles/1000 hooks), slow trolling for Bigeye tuna (0.41 birds/day) and handlining targeting Yellowfin tuna (0.61 birds/day). Endangered Spectacled petrel (Procellaria conspicillata), Atlantic Yellow-nosed (Thalassarche chlororhynchos), and Black-browed (T. melanophris) albatrosses were the main seabirds caught. Immature Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) and immature or adult Leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) were the main sea turtles affected by the surface longline for Dolphinfish. Monitoring the fleet and bycatch levels, development of mitigation measures, establishment of educational programs, government control over the fleet, and enforcement, are urgently required for the hook-and-line fisheries described in the present study. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Esse trabalho analisa 13 anos de dados (1998 - 2010) de captura incidental de tartarugas nas frotas de espinhel pelágico do Brasil e Uruguai, levando em conta diferentes aspectos considerados na análise de produtividade e suscetibilidade (PSA) das tartarugas marinhas. - Caracterização de pescarias de espinhel em Santa Catarina, Brasil(2013) MAÇANEIRO, L.; BRITTO, M.; GIFFONI, B.; SALES, G.; FIEDLER, F.; NASCIMENTO, C.; OLIVEIRA JR, N.Desde a década de 90 a pesca é apontada como a principal ameaça às populações de tartarugas marinhas (National Research Council, 1990; Lewinson, 2004; Wallace et al., 2013). Para fazer frente a este problema, desde 2001 o Projeto Tamar desenvolve ações para identificar, quantificar e mitigar as capturas incidentais de tartarugas marinhas nas diferentes pescarias.
Item Captura incidental de tortugas marinas por las flotas de palangre pelágico de Brasil y Uruguay (1998 - 2010)(2014) GIFFONI, B.; LEITE JR, N.; MILLER, P.; PONS, M.; SALES, G.; DOMINGO, A.Sea turtles are highly migratory species and during their long life cycle they are face to different threats. One of the biggest threat is the incidental captures by fisheries, thus longline fishery has been pointed out as great concern due to the high captures rates. This work summarize the incidental capture of sea turtles by Brazilian and Uruguayan longline fleet, taking account different aspects to be considered in sea turtles productivity and susceptibility analyses - PSA. The data analyzed were collected by observers of the Programa Nacional de Observadores a Bordo de la Flota Atunera Uruguaya (PNOFA) from Uruguay, and Programa Nacional de Observadores de Bordo da Frota Pesqueira do Brasil (PROBORDO), Fundação Pró-TAMAR, Instituto ALBATROZ and Núcleo de Educação e Monitoramento Ambiental (NEMA) from Brazil. On total 25.164.089 hooks were sampled by Brazil and Uruguay between 2008 and 2010. On average, the sampled effort represented 1,5% of total effort applied at the same area by ICCAT CPCs. Loggerhead was the specie most captured (n =6.594), followed by Leatherback (n = 1.379) and Olive ridley (n = 600). All specie nest in Brazil. Regarding to productivity aspects, the Brazilian population of loggerhead, leatherback and olive ridley are increasing. For the Susceptibility analyses and considering availability, 7 different RMUs are being impacted by longline. Related to encounterability, the 3 turtle species spent the most time at the same depth range as Brazilian and Uruguayan longline toward to catch swordfish. For selectivity, juveniles of the loggerhead turtle are the most captured, while for olive ridley and leatherback, sub-adult and adult have been most captured by longline fleet of both countries.Item Effectiveness and design of marine protected areas for migratory species of conservation concern: A case study of post-nesting hawksbill turtles in Brazil(2021-06-21) SANTOS, A.J.B.; BELLINI, C.; SANTOS, E.A.P.; SALES, G.; RAMOS, R.; VIEIRA, D.H.G; MARCOVALDI, M.A.; GILLIS, A.; WILDERMANN, N.; MILLS, M.; GANDRA, T.; FUENTES, M.M.P.B.Marine protected areas (MPAs) are among the most widely used strategy to protect marine ecosystems and are typically designed to protect specific habitats rather than a single and/or multiple species. To inform the conservation of species of conservation concern there is the need to assess whether existing and proposed MPA designs provide protection to these species. For this, information on species spatial distribution and exposure to threats is necessary. However, this information if often lacking, particularly for mobile migratory species, such as marine turtles. To highlight the importance of this information when designing MPAs and for assessments of their effectiveness, we identified high use areas of post-nesting hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) in Brazil as a case study and assessed the effectiveness of Brazilian MPAs to protect important habitat for this group based on exposure to threats. Most (88%) of high use areas were found to be exposed to threats (78% to artisanal fishery and 76.7% to marine traffic), where 88.1% were not protected by MPAs, for which 86% are exposed to threats. This mismatch is driven by a lack of explicit conservation goals and targets for turtles in MPA management plans, limited spatial information on species' distribution and threats, and a mismatch in the scale of conservation initiatives. To inform future assessments and design of MPAs for species of conservation concern we suggest that managers: clearly state and make their goals and targets tangible, consider ecological scales instead of political boundaries, and use adaptative management as new information become available.Item Projeto TAMAR’s station in Florianópolis, state of Santa Catarina, southern Brasil(2012) STAHELIN, G. P.; SALES, G.; WANDERLINDE, J.Projeto Tamar-ICMBio (Tamar), the Brazilian sea turtle conservation program, has been operating since 1982, first in nesting areas and later extending its activities to coastal foraging areas with high levels of incidental captures of sea turtles by artisanal fisheries. Tamar has also maintained a range of activities related to the incidental capture of sea turtles by open sea fisheries (Marcovaldi & Marcovaldi 1999; Marcovaldi et al. 2006). In April 2005, a new Tamar station (27°34'19"S, 48°25'41"W) was orde inaugurated on Barra da Lagoa Beach (Praia da Barra da Lagoa), in Florianópolis, the capital of the state of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. The Santa Catarina coast is a foraging area for sea turtles: no regular nestings have been recorded there, although a small number of occasional nestings (by Caretta caretta and Dermochelys infor coriacea) have been observed in that region (Soto et al. 1997; Soto & Santos 2004). The main objective of the Florianopolis station, which is currently Tamar's southernmost station is to reduce the number of incidental captures of sea turtles in coastal and open lengt sea fisheries operating in the region. However, other threats to sea turtles, such as the ingestion of anthropogenic debris, have also captured this station's attention. The objective of this note is to make a short presentation of the conservation work done by the Florianopolis station.Item An overview of Projeto TAMAR-IBAMA'S activities in relation to the incidental capture of sea turtles in the Brazilian fisheries.(2002) THOMÉ, J. RProjeto TAMAR-IBAMA, the Brazilian Sea Turtle Conservation Program, is a network of 20 conservation stations that together protect over 1,000 km of Brazilian coastline on the mainland and on three oceanic islands. TAMAR was created in 1980, and initially focused its efforts on nesting beaches. Since 1990, a significant proportion of TAMAR's field activities have been focused on sea turtle feeding areas. Five species of sea turtles are found and nest in Brazil: the green turtle (Chelonia mydas, CM), the loggerhead (Caretta caretta, CC), the hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata, El), the olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea, LO) and the leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea, DC). Several nesting beaches and feeding areas are located near important fishing and/or shrimping grounds, where sizeable industrial fishing fleets operate. Moreover, artisanal fishing is a key livelihood for many coastal communities. Therefore, there is significant interaction between sea turtles and fishing gear around those areas, and the successful conservation of sea turtles by TAMAR must also involve actions to reduce incidental captures of sea turtles in fishing activities. Furthermore, since 1998 TAMAR has been collecting data on the level of sea turtle capture by the pelagic longline fishery off the Brazilian coast, which is a new frontier for conservation activities. Different actions have been implemented by TAMAR in each region in Brazil, depending on local conditions and available funds. C.; NARO-MACIEL, E.As tartarugas-verdes (Chelonia mydas), após o nascimento nas praias de desova e um período de alguns anos na zona oceânica do mar, realizam, quando juvenis pequenas, uma mudança para a zona nerítica (Musick e Limpus 1997). A transição da zona oceânica para a zona nerítica e a distribuição geográfica de juvenis e adultos pelas áreas de alimentação costeiras ainda são insuficientemente conhecidas, assim como os fatores que as definem. O conhecimento destes aspectos da história natural das tartarugas-verdes, além de nos permitir um melhor entendimento da sua biologia populacional, tem implicações para a conservação da espécie, por possibilitar o estabelecimento de relações mais claras entre áreas geográficas, estágios ontogenéticos das tartarugas, fatores ambientais ou de outra ordem e ações de conservação. A tartaruga-verde atualmente está classificada como Ameaçada pela União Internacional para a Conservação da Natureza (IUCN). A tartaruga-verde tem ampla distribuição na costa leste da América do Sul (Pritchard 1976; Marcovaldi e Marcovaldi 1999; González Carman et al. 2011). Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar a variação, em larga escala, da distribuição do tamanho (medido pelo comprimento curvo da carapaça, CCC) das tartarugas-verdes ao longo de parte da costa leste da América do Sul, com dados obtidos em áreas costeiras, com vistas a uma melhor compreensão da biogeografia da espécie na região.
