Cave lithology influencing EPT (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera) assemblages and habitat structure in south-eastern Brazil
(2021-06-18) Pacheco, Gabrielle Soares Muniz; Pellegrini, Thais Giovannini; Ferreira, Rodrigo Lopes
Knowing how cave lithology influences the benthic macroinvertebrate fauna is important for conservation and management of subterranean aquatic systems. However, those influences are still poorly understood, especially in the Neotropics. This study aimed to understand how cave lithology can influence benthic EPT assemblages by assessing the differences in the EPT genera structure in caves of two distinct lithologies (quartzite and limestone) and determining possible differences in the lithology habitats. To achieve this, hydrochemistry data and biological samples were collected in six allogenic cave streams from the two aforementioned lithologies. Results showed that both the assemblages from different lithologies and within the same lithology are statistically different, thus indicating probable regional influences beyond local ones. Our results also pointed out an effect of lithology on the substrate parameters, which in turn affected the EPT composition. Cave lithology affects water chemical and physical characteristics, thus supporting different EPT assemblages. The results of this study provide a foundation for future investigation on how the lithology can influence the benthic macroinvertebrate fauna and should lead to means of predicting such fauna on the basis of the cave lithology and water chemistry

Unique and fragile diversity emerges from Brazilian caves – two new amphibious species of Xangoniscus Campos-Filho, Araujo & Taiti, 2014 (Oniscidea, Styloniscidae) from Serra do Ramalho karst area, state of Bahia, Brazil
    (2022) Campos-Filho, Ivanklin S.; Gallo, Jéssica S.; Gallão, Jonas E.; Torres, Dayana F; Horta, Lília; Carpio-Díaz, Yesenia M.; López-Orozco, Carlos M.; Borja-Arrieta, Ricardo; Aguiar, José O.; Bichuette, Maria E.
Two new troglobitic species of Xangoniscus are described from two caves of Serra do Ramalho karst area, Bambuí geomorphological group, state of Bahia. Xangoniscus lapaensis sp. nov. is described from Gruna Boca da Lapa cave, and X. loboi sp. nov. from Gruna da Pingueira II cave. Both species are blind and depigmented and show amphibious habits, as observed for all species of Xangoniscus described until now. Xangoniscus lapaensis sp. nov. occurs in travertine pools fed by water of the upper aquifer, and X. loboi sp. nov. occurs in a small stream, an upper vadose tributary. Both species occur in fragile microhabitats. Ecological and behavioral data, conservation remarks, and IUCN conservation assessments are included to provide background data for conservation efforts in this unique karst area.

Stromatolites in Caves in Southeastern Brazil and their Importance to Geoconservation
(2020-06-03) G. Vasconcelos, André; S. Bittencourt, Jonathas; F. Eliziário, Neuber; M. Kraemer, Bruno; S. Auler, Augusto
This article presents a detailed description of stromatolites formed simultaneously with caves’ bedrock, within karstic areas in Southeastern Brazil. We discuss the importance of such fossils for geoconservation and their legal preservation under the Brazilian law. Six caves are described with occurrences of Conophyton-type stromatolites. All those caves are located in the State of Minas Gerais, one of which in the Arcos-Pains-Doresópolis Karst (Bambuí Group) and the others in the Vazante-Paracatu-Unaí Karst (Vazante Group). In general, the stromatolite columns are not exquisitely preserved, yet conspicuously exposed in cross section and lateral view. The stromatolite caves are easily accessed, making them suitable for scientific and educational activities to both academic and non-specialized public. Yet, such activities should rely on the implementation of a management plan for monitoring potential damage due to anthropic interference. Given the rarity of caves with fossils embedded in their host rocks, these structures should be treated with the status of maximum importance for conservation, according to the Brazilian legislation, thereby ensuring their permanent protection, with the support of the public entities for environment and nature.
