    Cave lithology effect on subterranean biodiversity: A case study in quartzite and granitoid caves

    Physical features and lithology variations contribute to promoting changes in faunal composition and richness between caves in Neotropics. Cave lithology effects on biodiversity were reported to iron ore caves in Brazil, however, it is less clear to granitoid and quartzite caves. Hence, based on these two kinds of rocks we correlate invertebrates species richness and composition with some cave features (lithology, the distance between caves, cave extension, number of entrances, entrance size, environmental stability, and altitude). Overall, 1,027 invertebrate species were recorded in 50 sampled caves. From this total, 11 obligate cave species were found. Invertebrate assemblages showed considerable turnover between caves and rock types with a strong contribution of replacement component of beta diversity. Replacement influence was greatest in quartzite caves mainly because of altitude and distance among caves. Furthermore, richness was determined by cave extension in both lithotypes, although this relationship was much more pronounced for the granitoid caves, which contradicts previous studies. The granitoid caves studied here are predominantly structured by stacked blocks with macro and meso anastomosed subterranean spaces that provide an extensive network of interstices with structural characteristics similar to shallow subterranean habitats that may increase in habitat availability and species richness. The study highlight that the lithology-mediated effects of cave extension on richness must be considered for quartzite and granitoid in the ecological and conservational proposal. Furthermore, altitude and distance among caves were important elements determining invertebrate composition.

    Cave-dwellers Diploexochus (Isopoda, Armadillidae): new species and new records of the genus from Brazil

    Two new species of Diploexochus are described. Diploexochus spinatus sp. nov. from Lapa do Honorato cave, located in the municipality of Iuiu, and Diploexochus obscurus sp. nov. from Água Escura I cave, located in the municipality of Carinhanha, both in the southwest of Bahia State, northeastern Brazil. Both species are likely to occur in caves due to anthropogenic impacts in the surrounding area (such as deforestation) and/or looking for the stable microclimatic conditions found in the subterranean realm. Additionally, D. echinatus is recorded in a cave in the municipality of Rurópolis, Pará State, northern Brazil. These represent the first records of the genus for subterranean environments.

    A new genus of Styloniscidae, Chaimowiczia gen. nov., is described with two new species: Chaimowiczia tatus sp. nov. from Gruta do Padre cave (Santana, Bahia) and Chaimowiczia uai sp. nov. from Lapa d’água do Zezé cave (Itacarambi, Minas Gerais). The new genus and species were allocated into the subfamily Iuiuniscinae, hitherto monotypic, by the pronounced rectangular-shaped lateral pereonites epimera, dorsal surface smooth, body outline continuous without a gap between pereon and pleon, and pleonites 3 to 5 developed forming tips. The two species of Chaimowiczia gen. nov. differ in the shape of cephalon antennal lobes, pereonite 1 epimera, pleonite 5 posterior margin and uropod exopod and endopod proportion.

    Coarazuphium auleri sp. n. (Carabidae: Zuphiini), a new troglobitic ground-beetle in Central-Western Brazil

    ABSTRACT In this paper, we describe Coarazuphium auleri sp. n. Until now, the species occurred in a single limestone cave, located at Nobres municipality (state of Mato Grosso – Central-Western Brazil). The new species comprises an apterous species from the genus Coarazuphium with the complete absence of hindwings, eyes are composed of very reduced eyes-scars, depigmentation and ommatidia are not evident. We also provide an updated key for species identification of Coarazuphium from the most recently published one. We followed the criteria of IUCN and classified the species as Critically Endangered – CR, IUCN criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), since the species has a restricted geographical distribution; estimated occurrence length <100 km2; population in few locations and with a continued decline in area, extent, and quality of habitat. According to Brazilian law, the existence of a critically endangered species places the Lagoa Azul cave as one of maximum relevance.

    Erebonyx catacumbae, n. gen. et sp.: a blind, troglobitic cricket from Brazil (Orthoptera, Grylloidea, Phalangopsidae)

    Erebonyx catacumbae, new genus and species of a troglobitic phalangopsid cricket are described from Brazil. Few specimens were collected from a limestone cave located in the municipality of Campo Formoso, northern State of Bahia, in a semi-arid zone characterized by the Caatinga vegetation. A brief discussion on troglomorphisms is provided, as well as some ecological remarks and potential threats for this species.

    Everything is similar, everything is different! Trichorhina Budde-Lund, 1908 (Oniscidea, Platyarthridae) from Brazilian caves, with descriptions of 11 new species

    The present work describes 11 new species of the genus Trichorhina from Brazilian caves in the states of Bahia, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, and São Paulo. Moreover, the distribution of T. tomentosa has been expanded to include the states of Mato Grosso and Minas Gerais. Additionally, a distribution map and a key for all Brazilian species of Trichorhina, including epigean ones, are provided.

    Expanding the range of the troglobitic millipede Pseudonannolene ambuatinga Iniesta & Ferreira, 2013: insights into its distribution and conservation status (Spirostreptida, Pseudonannolenidae)

    Pseudonannolene Silvestri, 1895 (Spirostreptida, Pseudonannolenidae) is one of the most common genera of millipedes in Brazilian caves. To date, only three troglobitic species are known in a list of 56 species described for the genus. In this study, we report new records of the cave-dwelling species Pseudonannolene ambuatinga Iniesta & Ferreira, 2013 in Minas Gerais state. These records extend its distribution by approximately 600 km2, making it the most widely distributed cave-dwelling millipede in the country. We also provide a new assessment of its conservation status based on the records and threats to its populations.

    The accumulation of studies delimiting species in Amazonia has not only shed light on the patterns of its outstanding species richness but also allowed a better understanding of the processes of diversification within this immense region. Nevertheless, vast knowledge gaps remain even for prominent anuran species complexes, such as the Rhinella margaritifera species group. This clade of toads comprises 23 valid species-level taxa, mainly distributed in Amazonia but also in South America’s Dry Diagonal and Atlantic and trans-Andean rainforests. Species boundaries and taxonomy in this group are notoriously complex, with studies suggesting the existence of several unnamed species. Available phylogenetic information suggests an Andean-western Amazonian origin of the group with subsequent diversification within Amazonian lowlands during the last 10 Myr and secondary dispersals into other Neotropical regions. To further test this biogeographic scenario and improve knowledge on species diversity, we used an unprecedentedly large mtDNA sampling (>800 16S sequences) across the clade’s distribution and comprising all but one described species. We delimited 54 Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units, which we tested further based on patterns of variation of a nuclear locus and acoustic and morphological data. This approach confirmed the existence of at least 25 candidate species, 19 of which correspond to currently recognized taxa whereas 30 remained ‘unconfirmed’. Our results clarify the taxonomic status of some species but also suggest multiple introgression events that blur some mtDNA-based species boundaries. Lastly, to provide a temporal framework for the clade’s diversification, we generated a time-calibrated phylogenetic tree based on a mitogenomic matrix, which confirmed a Miocene (∼9 Ma) western Amazonian origin and six major clades in the group, each having initially diversified in different regions within Amazonia. Most of these clades have later dispersed throughout Amazonia during the establishment of the modern Amazonian hydrographic system, i.e., in the last 6 Myr.

    New cave species ofPectenoniscus Andersson, 1960 (Isopoda: Oniscidea: Styloniscidae) and an identification key for the genus

    The genus Pectenoniscus Andersson, 1960currently presents two described species, one epigean, Pectenoniscus angulatus Andersson, 1960, from Nova Teutônia municipality, Santa Catarina state (Southern Brazil) and the hypogean Pectenoniscus liliae Campo-Filho, Bichuette and Taiti, 2019, found in two caves in the Serra do Ramalho karst area (Carinhanha municipality), Bahia state (northeastern Brazil). Recent surveys in karstic areas of Minas Gerais and Bahia revealed six new cave species from this genus, which are herein described. Two species occur in Minas Gerais state in the transition between the biomes Cerrado (Brazilian savannah) and Caatinga (mesophytic and xeromorphic forests): Pectenoniscus montalvaniensis n. sp. from Abrigo da Ema cave (Montalvânia municipality) and Pectenoniscusjuveniliensisn. sp. fromGruta do Tabuleirinho cave ( Juvenilia municipality). The other four species were found in Bahia state, in Caatinga biome: Pectenoniscus iuiuensisn. sp. from Baixa da Fortuna cave(Iuiu municipality); Pectenoniscus carinhanhensis n. sp. from three caves in Serra do Ramalho (Carinhanha municipality); Pectenoniscus santanensis n. sp. from Gruta do Padre cave (Santana municipality); and Pectenoniscus morrensis n. sp. from Gruta dos Brejões cave (Morro do Chapéu municipality). Aside from the taxonomic descriptions, we provide ecological notes for each described species, as well as an identification key for Pectenoniscus.

    A new species of Chaimowiczia from the karstic Serra do Ramalho plateau, Brazil (Oniscidea, Synocheta, Styloniscidae)

    Chaimowiczia belongs to the subfamily Iuiuniscinae, family Styloniscidae, and is currently composed of two troglobitic species: C. tatus and C. uai, both occurring in Brazil. A new species of Styloniscidae found in Brazil (Bahia state, Serra do Ramalho, Serra Verde cave) was allocated into this genus by the antenna flagellum with three articles; rectangular-shaped lateral pereonites epimera not apically acute and apex of pleopod 2 endopod with an acute tip and an acute or rounded lobe directed outwards. The new species, C. obybytyra sp. nov., is here described and rises to 25 the number of troglobitic styloniscidean species known for Brazilian caves.
