Item Enhancing the still scattered knowledge on the taxonomic diversity of freshwater triclads (Platyhelminthes: Dugesiidae) in caves from two Brazilian Biomes(2020-11-18) Hellmann, Lindsey; Lopes Ferreira, Rodrigo; Rabelo, Lucas; Leal-Zanchet, Ana MariaRecent studies have recorded new species of freshwater planarians in caves of the biomes Amazonia, Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, and Caatinga. Herein we contribute to enhancing this knowledge by describing three new cave-dwelling species of Girardia from three different cave systems situated in two biomes (Atlantic Forest and Cerrado) in eastern Brazil. Girardia spelaea sp. n., from a limestone cave, is eyeless and shows a whitish body. The other two species, G. asymmetrica sp. n. and G. ibitipoca sp. n., from limestone and quartzite caves, show pigmented bodies and eyes. The three species are characterized by dorsal and/or dorsoventral testes and a bulbar cavity with forked ental portions, varying from round or ovoid to elongate. Each new species is easily recognized by a unique combination of characters of their external morphology and reproductive system. Girardia spelaea is probably a troglobitic species and the two other species may be trogrophiles, all of them with a restricted known distribution.Item A Highly Troglomorphic New Genus of Sminthuridae (Collembola, Symphypleona) from the Brazilian Semiarid Region(2022-07-19) Souza, Paolla Gabryelle Cavalcante de; Medeiros, Gleyce da Silva; Ferreira, Rodrigo Lopes; Souza-Silva, Marconi; Bellini, Bruno CavalcanteHere, we describe the highly troglomorphic Troglobentosminthurus gen. nov. from Água Clara cave system, Caatinga domain, Bahia, Brazil. Troglobentosminthurus luridus gen. nov. sp. nov. has remarkably long antennae, legs and furca, and lacks body pigments, except for small orange eye patches which also show a reduction in the number of eyes (5 + 5) and lens sizes. The overall morphology of the genus, with long and highly sub-segmented antennae, resembles other Sminthurinae of the Temeritas-group, especially Temeritas Richards and Galeriella Ćurčić and Lučić. However, it is unique, especially in the combination of the number of antennae IV subsegments and eyes, frontal head chaetotaxy and empodial complex morphology. Two type specimens have remnants of a mite and another specimen from the new species in their gut contents, supporting the species may be occasional predators and even cannibals. We also provide identification keys and comparative tables to the subfamilies of Sminthuridae and the Temeritas-group of genera.Item A new genus of Micromygalinae (Araneae, Microstigmatidae) from Brazil, with transfer of Masteria emboaba Pedroso, Baptista & Bertani, 2015 and description of six new species(2019-01-08) Passanha, Victor; Cizauskas, Igor; Brescovit, AntonioThe family Microstigmatidae is composed of two subfamilies, Microstigmatinae and Micromygalinae, seven genera and 16 species. Micromygalinae is monotypic, comprising the species Micromygale diblemma Platnick & Forster, 1982 from Panama. A new genus, Tonton is described as a new member of the Micromygalinae. Masteria emboaba Pedroso, Baptista & Bertani, 2015, is transferred to the new genus and six new species from Brazil are described and attributed to Tonton gen. n.: the type species, T. itabirito sp. n., T. queca sp. n., T. matodentro sp. n. and T. sapalo sp. n., all from the state of Minas Gerais; T. ipiau sp. n. from the state of Bahia and T. quiteria sp. n. from the state of Maranhão. Among the cavernicolous species, only T. itabirito sp. n. is considered troglobitic by the total absence of eyes.Item A new species of Spelunconiscus (Isopoda: Oniscidea: Styloniscidae) for Brazilian caves: new record for the type species and an emended diagnosis for the genus(2022) Bastos-Pereira, Rafaela; Souza, Leila Aparecida ; Sandi, Beatriz ; Ferreira, RodrigoSpelunconiscus Campos-Filho, Araujo and Taiti, 2014 is a monotypic genus of the family Styloniscidae represented by a troglobitic species, Spelunconiscus castroi Campos-Filho, Araujo and Taiti, 2014, from the cave MOC-32, in the state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. New representatives of this family were found in three additional caves, which revealed a new species, Spelunconiscus septemlacuum sp. nov., from Taboa and Tatuzinhos caves and a new occurrence for the type-species in Retiro cave. The original diagnosis of Spelunconiscus is emended due to the discovery of a spur-like structure in the male pereopod VII ischium, as well as some supplementary traits that have not been previously considered. Spelunconiscus septemlacuum sp. nov. differs from S. castroi in the number of articles of the antennal flagellum, in the proportion between this flagellum and 5th article of peduncle of antenna, in the size of maxilliped endite, in the morphology of male pleopod II and in body size. A discussion is provided for both taxonomic and ecological concerns.
